Why I wrote 'Woke Army'

I want to inoculate you to its insidious tactics

On Jan. 23, 2002, the trajectory of my life changed when my dear friend and colleague from the Wall Street Journal left a home I had rented in Karachi, Pakistan, to set off for an interview from which he never returned.

Ever since, as a Muslim feminist, I have been fighting an extreme interpretations of Islam, called “Islamism,” or political Islam, which treats women like second-class citizens and divides people with a sectarianism that used my friend’s identity as a Jew, an American and a son of Israel as an excuse to brutally murder him.

Eighteen years later, on June 7, 2020, the principal of my son’s high school, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, scolded the mostly Asian, mostly immigrant families and students at the school to check our “privileges,” putting a target on the backs of our families and our children because of our identities. From that moment, I began fighting this divisive ideology, called “Wokeism,” that divides people by race, “privilege” and identity, creating a new hierarchy of human value and implementing a new racism on society.

Over the past two decades, I have been called everything from a “Zionist media whore” to an “Islamophobe” and now an “white supremacist.” My crime? Rejecting these extremes. But I have have gone from the hunted to the hunter, and I have investigated in great detail the nexus between these two extremes.

Woke Army: The Red-Green Alliance That Is Destroying America’s Freedom is a blueprint of how Islamists and Leftists are working together to undermine our nation as we know it. One of the first interviews I did was on Fox Business, and that was appropriate, because the Woke Army is destroying not only the fabric of America but our educational system and the very idea of meritocracy, excellence and academic achievement because of its goals is the dumbing down of America — so we are less competitive on the global stage.

In my book, I share the lessons I’ve learned and the findings I’ve dug up over these two decades, in struggle, sometimes tears, but always hope. I released this book on Valentine’s Day as a acerbic love letter to my enemies but really a declaration of love to the country that gave me opportunity, the world in which I deeply believe, the friends and family who traverse with me on this journey for goodness, value and virtue.

This was not an easy book to write. Woke Army is the result of a multiyear investigation involving more than 300 interviews with sources, 20 subpoenas, thousands of pages of documents, emails, texts, court filings, and transcripts, and hundreds of hours of video and audio. I am so grateful to my parents and my family for standing by me every step of the way. And to all of you for sending me messages of support in direct messages, for subscribing to this humble publishing effort of my one-woman Nancy Drew operation, for caring.

In the book, I expose the unholy alliance between Islamist groups operating in the United States – many with foreign backing and terror ties – and the homegrown radical leftists who push critical race theory and other woke ideologies. 

I’ve combined my skills honed over 15 years as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal with my experience on the frontlines fighting against censorship and indoctrination to rip the veil off the forces that threaten our freedom, from the local school board to the halls of Congress. Revelations

This is what I reveal to readers:

• The Woke Army’s ultimate goal: You will comply with their views of “systemic racism” and their cures for it—granting slavery reparations, enforcing quotas, defunding the police, and indoctrinating your kids, for starters—or they will shut you up and shut you down.

• The psychological basis for the Woke Army’s strategy of manipulation: “They create a phenomenon of suicidal empathy, shaming people to subsume themselves to their own destruction,” according to clinical neuropsychologist Orli Peter.

• The members of the “Honor Brigade,” the Muslim faction of the Woke Army committed to defending the “honor” of Islam – in reality, shutting down any criticism of its hardline elements – and the real identities of architects of a website, LoonWatch.com, established by a major Islamist organization that touts itself as a civil rights group to spread disinformation and wage character assassinations against Muslim reformers, atheists and others

• The secretive hub of Islamist political influence off Northern Virginia’s “Wahhabi Corridor,” where shadowy organizations funnel money from Islamist groups to Democratic candidates and other causes that forward their agenda

• How the former Virginia Secretary of Education, a failed politician funded by enterprises off the Wahhabi Corridor, used state resources to promote a video lesson about the 9/11 attacks that told teachers to avoid calling the hijackers “terrorists,” simply calling them “extremists” with no discussion of religion.

• How shared anti-Semitism and the goal of destroying the state of Israel brings together Islamists and liberal, secular activists

• The ugly, racist truth about “intersectionality” as expressed by actual quotations from activists, from “We can’t center Jewish voices too much because Black Lives Matter might have an issue with it,” to “Plz Allah give me strength to not cuss/kill these men and white folks out here today.”

As parents, we’re not just facing off against the local school board, but against the Woke Army. It is an organized, well-financed group of radical leftist activists and some unconventional allies -- radical Islamists -- who seek to systematically use grievance and identity politics to fundamentally transform America as we know it.
